ethiaSo I'm about three months late to the party. My only excuse is that the insanity levels of work have reached a peak that would drive them through the roof of the Burj Dubai with ease. I kid you not. But, on with the show.
Man, I totally didn't expect this. A true reboot; an altered timeline that stays altered for once, how fantastic is that? This means I get to ignore huge chunks of cannon that I didn't have a clue about in the first place.

What what George Kirk, why did you have to make me cry TEN minutes into the whole thing?! Discussing baby names in the face of certain death and being all I love my wife and my newborn son and yet I steer this ship right into the enemy's heart because I am the only one who can do it and what a way to start this movie, JJ. I sit here flailing just thinking about it. It could have come across as cheesy or corny but it didn't and I bow to the actors who pulled it off flawlessly, go you, you awesome people.
And then Kirk the Kid in the car he stole from his stepfather, being all defiant and my name is JAMES TIBERIUS KIRK and oh, the kid wears his name proudly, he does.
SPOCK! Young!Spock, in his learning bowl, being bullied by Vulcan kids, and I was so stunned to see this, like, the fact that they aren't above this kind of crap makes them so much more accessible to me, if that makes sense. I totally wanted for Spock to keep his cool just to show them up but that doesn't mean I didn't do an internal whoop when he smacked obnoxious!kid right upside the head. AND THEN SAREK, WHO'S TOTALLY MY FAVORITE VULCAN, DOES HIS COOL PARENTING THING TO SPOCK AND I WANT TO HUG HIM JUST BECAUSE. Man, I have such love for Sarek, ever since the days of TNG and that one time when he was sick and couldn't contain his emotions any longer and Picard acted as his release and those were awesome times. I should totally look up the episode title but I'm Lazy McLazypants today, so no joy. :]
AND THEN THERE WAS MORE VULCAN PARENTING COOLNESS EXCEPT THIS TIME THERE WAS SO MUCH WARMTH AND I WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE HOW FUCKING IMPORTANT AMANDA WAS TO SPOCK. I gladly could have watched two hours just seeing Spock grow up and interact with both his parents, struggling to incorporate both his father's and mother's cultural heritage into his everyday life, forever torn between logic and emotion. And Amanda would totally have supported him in his efforts, being his emotional support and guide and seeing his love in a thousand little ways even though he'd never express it to her like any other human kid would.
OMFG what's up with that butt-fugly sweater, Spock? I swear the sight of him in this thing makes me crack up EVERY TIME I REWATCH THE TRAILER and oh Spock, you and your questionable fashion choices. BUT, he chose Starfleet over the Science Academy, so all is right with the world. At least for Spock.
Enter Uhura, and what an entry that was. You go, girl. Totally loved Kirk playing his charms like whoa and still getting turned down, repeatedly. Hee! Cue drunken brawl AND Captain Pike, who's as crush-worthy as they come. I dare you to do better, rawr. Any time you like, Captain, any time you like.
Teehee for Karl Urban whose line delivery was spot on; I just wish he'd kept the beard, dammit.
I LOVED the way Kirk breezed through his third (!) Kobayashi Maru test; the others' reactions were just hilarious. If at first you don't succeed... :]
HANGAR SCENE. Spock and Uhura as in SPOCK AND UHURA. Askd;jkljf. I don't care if we're talking probably inappropriate teacher-student dynamic BECAUSE CLEARLY, UHURA'S GOT HIM WHIPPED. Though I have to admit that at this point, I was still wondering if they were really going to go down that road. Boy, WERE THEY EVER. \o/
HOLY FUCK they destroyed Vulcan. Which, at this point I was still pretty sure they'd reset. And Pike was forced to play his part in History Repeating and Kirk was AWESOMECAKES times ten and UHURA KISSED SPOCK IN THE TURBOLIFT ZOMG YES YES YESSSS. And later, HE KISSED HER BACK RIGHT IN FRONT OF KIRK, which, pls to make sure the writers stay on exactly that same kind of crack for a good long time, mkay? ALSO: I managed to get through all this with my eyes dry, even Amanda's death (which: ZOMG NO), and then Sarek told Spock he married Amanda because he LOVED her and there went my composure, thank you oh so very much.
Then lots of action stuff happened, and somewhere in between the utter coolness of Mr. LEONARD NIMOY ♥ ♥ ♥, and his fantabulous ship from the future, and MIND MELD FTW and everyone, everyone got to be a big damn hero. And even the time travel plot device was cool because it served its purpose by not being reset and now we've got a brand new sandbox to play in. Fun times!
Also: I loved Chekov to tiny little pieces (Wiktor Wiktor, heee), but Scotty and Sulu still have to grow on me.
In conclusion: BRING ON THE NEXT PART SOON or at least let me have the DVD of this one sooner than October, you horrible teasing people at Paramount. That is all.
